OddMachine used my passion project ODDMACHINE // Main Titles to sell the client on the style and atmosphere of the piece. They were to be displayed on 3 clear HD Planar Monitors side-by-side to create the extra wide framing. A very cool caveat was that all the black pixels would be transparent on these clear monitors. This piece combines Tron inspired stylizing with my glass wireframe concept design to create an awesome captivating animation sequence. I lead the team at OddMachine in collaborating to bring several elements together such as the lines done by Chris Hooker, the 3D elements and post effects such as flares and grading that I created, and the awesome camera work and model preparation by Jake Allen. Combining elements from Maya and V-Ray with matte painted set-extensions inside Nuke proved to be a challenging and educational process, but an extremely fun one. It was my first time really working with multiple channels from an Open EXR file to composite 3D passes for the best results. It was also the first time I worked inside Nuke's 3D space, using tracked cameras, cards, sphere environments, and animation inside Nuke. After all of this came together, I built my own complex system of setups in order to make lens flares that always came from the light sources in 3D space, along with mimicking In-Camera effects in post to recreate a more photo realistic and organic shot. The company has been shifting its identity to keep relevant in the always evolving world of production. This sleek and atmospheric take on their already existing brand was a much needed boost to their overall appearance. Having experimented with this style of frames before, I used the R&D to my advantage and took OddMachine's old tool set identity and upgraded it to a 3D version with help from our 3D wizard Jake Allen. I was VFX Supervisor on both shoots and made sure tracking and green screen data was of quality to take back to Chicago for post. The reason we had to shoot at two locations was that our talent Mr. Kapoor couldn't make it to California where the shoot needed to take place. The client needed the location in the spot to be indistinguishable yet beautiful. Our location Lone Pines, California met all the criteria and was the perfect place to do donuts with a Ferrari Spyder! The second problem to solve was that we needed the Ferrari to go off-road. This wasn't going to happen practically for obvious reason of risking damage to the sports car. We planned ahead and shot plates to create this effect in post. I lead the graphics team to create assets and process the shots. We used several plates combined with tracking and clean up work to put Ranbir and his Ferrari into the desert scene. We also used similar techniques to make the Ferrari go off-road. The fork in the road did not exist either and had to be created and composited as well. I had the great pleasure of working with Chris Hooker, a talented artist from my graphics team at OddMachine. Director Adam Pray had a clear vision of the animation style and design. We shot this footage in the Fall, so there were no leaves on the trees. In order for this spot to look nice, the plan was then to composite lively trees into the background behind the talent. I used hi-rez images of mid land trees and several animation techniques to bring some life into them. I set an arrangement and made sure they felt like they belonged in their spaces. The talent needed to be rotoscoped back on top. This CAT spot used on their website (catallday.com/takeyourpick), shows the audience the multiple choices they have when choosing to rend a CAT truck. Everything except the talent was created by our graphics team at OddMachine. As Team Lead, I was responsible for divide and conquering the project objectives and bringing the collaborative members together for the finished product. On set, I was VFX Supervisor and made sure that tracking markers and the green screens were appropriate for the heavy post work we had to do. I built the store space, my fellow artist Chris Hooker created all of the truck dioramas and fellow artist Jake Allen was responsible for numerous tasks such as managing the models, animating the trucks, and creating the simulations used for exhaust and soil.
